In Mali 14 suspected militants were killed following an alleged escape attempt. According to the Malian army the suspects died a day after their arrest. But, conflicting reports are emerging casting this narrative into doubt.

Kenya's Women's group taps into informal credit

In Kenya, low income workers are turning to informal savings and credit groups known as 'chamas' or cooperatives, instead of banks. A group of women from a Nairobi slum started a 'chama' seven years ago and have been able to put up a gated housing community for members on the outskirts of the capital. Vik Chege with more.

China's Ambassador to the UK Liu Xiaoming has slammed US accusations of China stealing patents, calling the 301 investigations actions protectionist. Liu defended China, saying the country was the second largest source of international patent applications last year. He also said China has fully established a system of domestic patent laws. He called for cooperation with partners including the UK and the EU to pursue innovation-driven development.

South African court adjourns Zuma's graft case to June

Former South African president Jacob Zuma has appeared in court to face corruption charges relating to a $2.5 billion arms deal. Zuma later told a crowd outside the court that he would be proven innocent in the long running case that re-surfaced after his fall from power. The 75-year-old, whose scandal-plagued nine years in office were marked by economic stagnation and credit downgrades, faces 16 charges including fraud, racketeering and money laundering.

Ethiopia, Sudan, Egypt end Khartoum talks without an agreement

A tripartite committee meeting on issues arising from the construction of the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam has ended without a resolution, in Khartoum. The Sudanese Foreign Minister said officials from his country, Ethiopia and Egypt failed to reach an agreement. No new date has been fixed for the next round of talks. The talks began on Thursday.

SA Tax agency collects $101.3 billion, 0.6% below quoted target

Staying in South Africa, the country's tax agency collected over $101 B in the year through March. The figure is 0.6% below the revised target quoted by ex finance minister Malusi Gigaba, in his national budget speech in February. Personal-income taxes comprised 38% of collections while Value-added tax contributed 25% to the total. Angelo Coppola has more.

Niger inaugurates first ever triple level interchange road

To Niger now and the West African country has officially inaugurated the Hamani Diori interchange.The President of the Republic of Niger Mouhamadou Issoufo officiated the event. The bridge which is the first of its kind in the country was constructed at an estimated $79.3 m. Its construction is part of an endowment program of the country and is expected to ease traffic and push economic growth. Niger is on a mission to rapidly improve infrastructure in the capital, Niamey.

World's first luxury space hotel to open in 2022

Orion Span has announced that it's opening the world's first luxury hotel in space. The company unveiled plans for "Aurora Station" at the Space 2.0 Summit in San Jose, California on Thursday. The planned modular space station is going to have its first guests in 2022. The stay doesn't come cheap, the 12-day adventure costs a whopping $9.5 M per person.
